Camping in Materuni

Relax, discover the area and get to know the people of the Chagga tribe

If you just want to spend a few days relaxing, are looking for an ideal starting point to explore the area of Kilimanjaro, or want to get to know the culture of the Chagga tribe, then the village of Materuni is the perfect place for you.

In a picturesque setting, amongst the rainforest, in the foothills of Kilimanjaro, is our own small property complete with camping.

The accommodation comprises simple, high-quality tents (max 2 persons), which are equipped with comfortable mattresses and fresh bed linen. The number of guests is deliberately limited - currently we have a maximum of four tents available, so that for the majority of your stay you are completely undisturbed by the outside world (only during lunchtimes do we have some visitors who are participating in our waterfall and coffee tours).

Whilst we wish to preserve the authenticity and naturalness of this place, we are able to offer a basic level of comfort: Hot water is provided each morning and evening, there is a simple outdoor solar shower, and a camping toilet is available too.

Needless to say, no one ever goes hungry in Materuni as we are surrounded by the most amazing produce growing all around us! In the morning, we serve a simple but nutritious breakfast. According to your wishes and your daily schedule we also prepare lunch and dinner for you. (We can cater for vegetarians). Meals can be served in your tent or in our covered dining area and there is also a small outside bar at which you can help yourself to tea and coffee. Chilled soft drinks and beer are available for a small cost.

During your stay, you can choose to simply relax on our campsite or explore the surrounding area independently. There are several paths and tracks, one of which leads to the area’s most beautiful waterfall and pool (about a 45 minute walk) - A perfect place for a rest and a refreshing bathe, so don't forget your swimwear.

Our English-speaking village guides will also be at your side if you want to get to know more about the local Chagga people. At noon and in the evening, there is the opportunity to prepare a meal together with Mama Agnes – one of our most respected elders in the village and a fabulous cook!

Materuni is also a good starting point for our day trips to the surrounding area. Just ask us and we will help you with your planning. If you wish, we can also arrange transportation to Moshi and the surrounding areas. The camping can be combined with our Waterfall & Coffee Tour.

As you can see - Materuni offers many possibilities. How you choose to use them depends entirely on your time and imagination.

Please don't hesitate to contact us so that we can help you plan your own personal experience today.
