Trekking in the West Usambara Mountains (5 days)

Remote, wild, breathtaking - Hiking in the "African Galápagos in the Clouds"

The West Usambara Mountains are a hiker's paradise, far from mass tourism—a piece of genuine, unspoiled Tanzania visited by only a few travelers so far.

Rising up to 2,300 meters, the mountains offer countless hiking opportunities to spectacular viewpoints, across mountain peaks, through rainforests, Shambaa villages, and many fertile valleys, most of which are used for agriculture.

Together with the East Usambara Mountains, they form part of an ancient crystalline mountain range, the Eastern Arc Mountains, which stretch from the Taita Hills in Kenya, across the Pare and Usambara Mountains, to southwestern Tanzania. Because of their rich flora and fauna, the mountains are often referred to as the "African Galápagos in the Clouds." In contrast to the East Usambaras, the West Usambaras are densely populated, with extensive agriculture and a relatively well-developed road network by Tanzanian standards.

During the three-day hike, you should not expect too much luxury. Accommodations are simple: the first night is in a lodge, and the second night in a convent. Both have very basic sanitary facilities, and hot water is not always guaranteed.

Before and after the hike, you will stay at the cozy Lawns Hotel in Lushoto, located just above the town. The hotel has a beautiful garden and is an ideal place to relax, with really excellent food.

During the hike, you will cover approximately 43 kilometers in total. Daily stages are about 14–15 kilometers, with 5–6 hours of walking per day (excluding breaks). Overall, the hike is relatively easy, though there are some steeper ascents and descents, so a moderate level of fitness and endurance is recommended.

Itinerary

Day 1 Drive from Moshi to Lushoto

You will be picked up at your hotel in the morning by your English-speaking driver. The journey first takes you along the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro towards the Kenyan border, before heading south on the Dar es Salaam Highway towards the coast. Along the way, you will pass the Pare Mountains, a range rising to over 2,400 meters. Soon, the Usambara Mountains come into view, and shortly after, you reach Mombo, where the road branches off into the mountains towards Lushoto. Here you will stop for lunch before continuing along a paved road with many hairpin bends. The drive passes through small villages, offering beautiful views back over the plains and a first impression of the West Usambaras. After about 45 minutes, you arrive at the mountain town of Lushoto, formerly known as Wilhelmsthal.

You will spend the night at the Lawns Hotel. Enjoy the colonial charm of the 100-year-old main building and a delicious dinner. Before dinner, you are welcome to take a short walk down to Lushoto, just five minutes from the hotel. In the evening, your local guide will meet you and give a brief introduction to your three-day hike.

Lunch; Dinner

Day 2 Hike from Lushoto to Lukozi

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up. You first walk down to Lushoto and then uphill to the royal village of Kwembago. Along the way, your guide will share interesting insights into the history of the centuries-old Washambaa kingdom and the traditional ruling Kilindi clan.

The hike continues through cornfields and coffee plantations, with beautiful views over the valley and Lushoto. Soon, you reach the lush Magamba Rainforest, home to a variety of endemic plants, bird species, butterflies, and chameleons. With a bit of luck, you may also spot colobus monkeys.

At Magamba Forest Peak (1,840 meters), you will enjoy a particularly impressive view. Depending on the weather and the pace of the hike, you will have a short break here for lunch (otherwise slightly later). The trail then leads through forested areas and fertile valleys until you reach the village of Lukozi, where you will spend the night at a simple lodge, the Bushbaby Homestay.

Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 3 Hike from Lukozi to Rangwi

Today’s hike takes you through the villages and settlements of the Mbugu and Pare tribes. You will experience the everyday life of the mountain communities firsthand and enjoy meeting the locals—especially the many children who happily run up to greet you. The trail once again leads through beautiful landscapes with smaller mountain peaks and viewpoints, passing through forests and fertile valleys until you reach today’s destination: the convent in Rangwi. Here, you can relax and enjoy the sunset with a lovely view of the garden.

Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 4 Hike from Rangwi to Mambo

You can look forward to another varied day of hiking. You begin by passing through the village of Emau and continue up to the Shagayu summit (around 2,000 meters), which offers wonderful views. From there, the trail leads through a pine forest and the villages of Goka and Sunga.

After lunch, you hike on to the village of Mabughai, where you will visit a small pottery workshop run by local women. You can watch how skillfully they create bowls, cups, and other items—and of course, you’re welcome to purchase some of these beautiful pieces. The women will appreciate your support, and your purchase helps supplement their family income. From here, it’s not far to the final destination of your three-day hike: the mountain village of Mambo. From the terrace of the Mambo Cliff Inn at 1,900 meters, you have spectacular views of the Pare Mountains, Lake Kalimawe, and — even on a clear day — Mount Kilimanjaro. After taking in the fantastic surroundings, you will drive back to Lushoto, where you will spend one more night at the Lawns Hotel.

Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 5 Return from Lushoto to Moshi

Today, after the hike, you are welcome to sleep in a little longer and enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Around 10:30 a.m., our driver will pick you up, and with many memories of your hike, you will return to Moshi.
